This past week the twitter-sphere and blogs have been all a flutter about the recently launched UnhappyHipsters.com. Featuring Dwell photos with a satirical dialogue, this humorous take on the “lonely” modern world is sure to add just another reason why you love Dwell so much. We can now appreciate the beauty and design…as well as the now unavoidable mental dialogue.

Most like it, some don’t. For those of you that don’t, lighten up and go take a shot of wheatgrass.

We were recently inspired by this particular photo, while doing a post on the Parker Palm Springs Hotel. With its gorgeous screen at the entrance and the bubblegum pink jacketed bellhops, what could be a better fit for our Jonathan Adler Edition of “The Mid-Century Modern Mood”.

In need of some good ‘ol fashion entertainment? Good, us too. We are thinking of the days when men sported dashing suits and woman wore beautiful dresses. This weekend, our tastes are gravitating toward the institutional classic, North by Northwest. If you feel so inclined, grab your popcorn, sour patch kids and join us, as we watch this Alfred Hitchcock classic, full of action and suspense.

If you haven’t seen this epic mid-century film before and are still on the fence (perhaps contemplating something more recent), let us share some good reasons why this movie is a must watch for design-ophiles, movie buffs, and music lovers.

• Actors: Cary Grant; the archetype for the modern leading man, Eva Marie Saint; her classic beauty and charming style propelled her career for decades.
• Director: Alfred Hitchcock; easily considered the greatest director of his time, directed many classics including: Mr & Mrs Smith (yup the original), Vertigo, Psycho, and the Birds.
• Composer: Bernard Herrmann; renowned for his collaborations with Hitchcock, also wrote scores for: Citizen Kane, Psycho, and Taxi Driver (to name a few).
• Typography: North by Northwest was the first movie to include kinetic typography, which is basically moving words.
• Architecture: Features classic mid-century modern lines and design details as seen in the Vandamm house.
• Fashion/Interior Design: The movies was released in 1959. It can’t get any more mid-century than that.
